Do You Need Special Clippers For Cats?

Or can you use human hair clippers on cats?

It depends. Some groomers and pet owners think that very high quality, well made clippers like Wahl-brand ones work equally well on people and pets.

But cat fur is finer than human hair, and it can block up some models of human hair clipper, leading to tangles and snags.

If in doubt, it’s worth investing in a dedicated set of clippers for your cat.

Using Cat Hair Clippers

Cat hair clippers are fairly straight forward tools. But there are a few things to bear in mind whilst using them:

  • Wear gloves to protect your hands from scratches, and get help from a friend if possible.
  • Work somewhere you don’t mind getting covered in cat fur.
  • Make sure your cat’s coat is completely dry when you start.
  • Hold your cat’s skin taut as you clip, and move the clippers in the direction the fur is growing.
  • Pause regularly to check the blades aren’t getting blocked, or overheating.
  • Look after your tools! Clean and oil clipper blades after use to keep them in tip top condition.

Cat Hair Cuts

The most obvious use of clippers is to remove areas of tangled or matted fur that can’t be combed out.

This can be done on an as-needed basis.

But did you know that some owners clip their cats fur on a regular schedule?

Let’s look at the popular kitty hair cuts.

The Hygiene Cut

The hygiene cut, also known as the sanitary cut, involves shaving the fur around a cat’s bottom, under their tail.

This stops urine drying in their coat, or poo or cat litter getting stuck among the hairs.

Essentially it makes this area a little easier for long haired cats to groom and keep clean.

A Belly Shave

As it sounds, belly shaving involves clipping the hair all along a cat’s tummy.

This is the area most prone to mats, but also the region cats are most likely to resist having brushed.

Keeping the tummy fur trimmed short might be a practical option for old or overweight cats who are struggling to keep it tangle free by themselves.

Lion cuts

We’re all familiar with pictures of Poodles and their funky hair cuts.

And now a growing number of cat owners, often inspired by social media, are giving their long-haired cats “lion cuts”.

Lion cuts involving shaving all the fur from a cat’s body, so they’re left with just a mane, a fluffy tail, and socks.

The appeal seems to be partly aesthetic, and partly expedient, since shaved coats need less brushing.

Downsides of This Cut

But having a complete, or at least mostly complete coat serves several important purposes for your cat:

  • insulation against heat and cold
  • protection from scrapes and scratches
  • communication – when they raise their hackles as a visual warning.

So if you’re thinking of getting a long haired cat, bear in mind that regular coat brushing is part of the deal.

Shaving off most of their fur is not a kind substitute for that.
